India's armed forces are getting a made-in-India AI partner. On 27 October 2026, Bengaluru AI startup Sarvam signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff (HQ IDS), an organisation under the Ministry of Defence.

What the deal covers

According to Sarvam's own announcement, the MoU is an umbrella framework for AI projects across the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force, as well as joint and tri-service organisations under HQ IDS. Sarvam will design, develop and deploy AI applications for operational, training and decision-support needs, and provide technical support after that.

The focus areas named include decision support, target acquisition and data fusion across the sensor-to-shooter loop, with human oversight retained on operational decisions.

News reports from PTI, YourStory and Moneycontrol describe it as a five-year agreement. Sarvam's own post does not state the duration.

Who will build it

The work will be done by Chanakya, Sarvam's separate, firewalled division for national security and defence. It will use Sarvam's own AI stack, including foundation models such as Sarvam 105B. Sarvam says the systems will be built in India and deployed on sovereign infrastructure.

In a clarification on 28 October, Sarvam noted that the MoU was signed with HQ IDS, an organisation under the Ministry of Defence, and not with the Ministry directly, as some early reports said.

Why it matters

Sarvam was founded by Pratyush Kumar and Vivek Raghavan. Reports say the partnership aims to cut India's dependence on foreign technology for critical defence systems. A startup being trusted with national security work is a big moment for Indian deep tech.
